Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited his Bangladeshi counterpart, Tarique Rahman, to visit India along with his family. In a letter to Mr Rahman, PM Modi expressed his eagerness to work closely with the BNP leader to further strengthen the multifaceted bilateral relationship between the two nations.
PM Modi said as two close neighbours, India and Bangladesh have a deep-rooted friendship founded on shared history, cultural ties and the aspirations of the peoples for peace and prosperity. He said, the strong convergence between our respective developmental priorities shall serve as a guiding principle for our future cooperation.
Congratulating Mr Rahman on his electoral victory, PM Modi described the win as a reflection of the trust and confidence placed in his leadership by the people of Bangladesh. He said the mandate represented public support for Mr Rahman’s vision of steering the country toward peace, stability, and prosperity.
The Prime Minister added that he looks forward to enhancing cooperation with Dhaka across a wide range of sectors, including connectivity, trade, technology, education, skill development, energy, healthcare, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges. He also emphasised the importance of strengthening regional cooperation and advancing shared goals.
Earlier yesterday, Mr Rahman took oath as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh, marking a fresh political chapter after nearly 18 months of uncertainty under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus.
Representing India at the ceremony, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla attended the event along with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in the presence of senior political leaders and top military officials.
Led by Rahman, the BNP swept to power with a two-thirds majority, bagging 49.97 per cent of votes and 209 seats in the polls held on February 12. The results of the election were declared on February 13.
